DrupalCon Austin LogoAs we mentioned in a previous blog post, we are happy to be offering lead retrieval capability to our DrupalCon exhibitors, who have been asking for it for some time. We know that lead retrieval has been used before at DrupalCon and it raised some concerns among attendees. We have learned from that experience and plan to use those lessons at DrupalCon Austin, but we understand there may be questions. Here is more information on how it will work.

Can anyone with a smart phone scan my badge?
No, while smart phones may be able to scan, the only data they would receive is a random encrypted number.  Only exhibitors who have rented a scanner will be able to receive the unencrypted data from badges.

What data will be included?
First Name, Last Name, Company, Title, Email and Phone number.

How will it work?
When you walk into an exhibit space and engage with the various booth staff, you may choose to opt in and have your badge scanned so the company can follow-up with you. This can only happen with your consent.

What if I don’t want a barcode on my badge?
We will have stickers available at registration, should you want to cover a portion of your barcode. However, keep in mind the only way someone can scan your badge is with your consent.

How is this different to the last time it was used at a DrupalCon?
When we tried this before, the data was unencrypted, so any smartphone with the right app could gather attendee information.  Additionally, more information was available, including addresses. We listened to these concerns, and have worked to make this a very safe, secure process.

Why is this important to offer?
Our Exhibitors would love to be able to easily follow up with attendees who are interested in their products or services. The scanner system is much more efficient than attempting to use business cards for the same purpose.
