In September, we deployed a survey with the goal of better understanding the kinds of information various audiences need to learn and understand Drupal 8. The survey results are helping to tailor the content on Drupal.org including this new Drupal 8 overview page. The page will evolve over time and will soon include links to deeper information such as technical documentation. The results will also help determine which topics need the most amplification on social media.

First, a note about the results. The survey asked respondents to identify themselves by role and the vast majority identified themselves as developers or site builders. We also received responses from other roles including content authors, Drupal shop or agency professionals, IT professionals, marketers and designers, but there were too few responses from those audiences to gain much insight.

Many of the developers who responded are already working with Drupal 8 or plan to start working with it this year (note, on all charts the numbers along the X axis represent numbers of respondents, rather than percentages).

No surprise, developer respondents say they need technical documentation to learn what is new in the release.

Chart 2

For both the developers and site builders who responded, the topic they are most interested in configuration management.

This is just a quick snapshot of the survey results. If you would like to see combined graphs for all audiences and breakout graphs for developers and site builders, you can download the PDF here. The Drupal.org Content Working Group will soon be providing a way for people to submit Drupal 8 content they wish to share on Drupal.org. Stay tuned for more details on that!
