Update: Part of our charter at the Drupal Association is promoting Drupal and the great community behind the project. As such, we are developing a launch plan along with the Branding and Marketing Committee for Drupal 8 to help make sure there is a marketing splash when it is released. That includes media coverage, social media buzz, release parties, sales enablement and other elements that will give Drupal 8 the attention it richly deserves. An important part of that plan is a strong brand, which needs to appeal to a broad audience including developers, organizations and enterprises that may be evaluating Drupal against proprietary brands.

At DrupalCon Prague there will be a great deal of awesome Drupal 8 content presented and discussed. Ideally, we would like to have the brand completed in time to print materials for Prague in order to capitalize on the energy of the Con.

Drupal 8 will be the most powerful version of Drupal yet and deserves a strong brand the community can be proud of. Below is information about the project. Feel free to comment below the post with any questions.

Summary

The Drupal Association seeks a creative and innovative design partner to create a logo for the upcoming Drupal 8. Drupal 8 will be the most powerful version of Drupal yet. Significant upgrades to content creation, mobile, multilingual enhancements, as well as adoption of new technologies like Symfony will empower developers, designers, content authors, marketers and IT managers. Drupal is unique in that it used by everyone from university students working in their dorm rooms to some of the largest organizations in the world. The development of Drupal is powered by a passionate community of people who volunteer their time and effort because they believe in the project and its potential to do good in the world for individuals, non-profits and commercial companies alike. The new logo will need to appeal to all of those audiences. It will be featured on web pages, marketing collateral, and potentially a variety of other marketing vehicles such as PPT templates, email templates, stickers, and T-shirts.

Project Elements
The logo should work in a variety of contexts and settings, from large formats to 150 pixels square web badges. Following is a list of elements to be delivered:

  • Creative brief
  • Three initial concepts
  • Up to three rounds of review (you will need to present all three rounds)
  • All creative files generated throughout the process
  • Final logo delivered in CMYK, Greyscale and single color in .ai, .eps, .jpg and .png formats
  • Logo usage guidelines document

We will provide input and any requested background information or creative files (within reason of course) to the designer for the creative brief and discovery.

Requirements
In order to achieve a result the Drupal community can be proud of, we will give preference to designers or firms who have experience designing compelling logos. The experience need not be in software or technology, or for any particular products. We’re just looking for someone who understands eye-catching logo design. The designer will also need to be able to work quickly because our timeline is tight.

Compensation
The budget for the logo and usage guidelines work is not to exceed $5,000 USD.

Timeline
The timeline to complete the logo is tight. We need to have a completed logo by September 3, 2013.

Process
We will not be requesting proposals. Firms or designers that intend to bid on this project should emal Joe Saylor at jsaylor@association.drupal.org and include a link to an online portfolio. After reviewing portfolios, we will select a group of freelancers/firms and schedule a round of presentations where our team can talk with you, talk about your process, and your portfolio. After these presentations take place we will make a selection and work on a final round of negotiations and a contract. If your firm is not selected we will take the time to explain why.

Firms or designers that intend to bid should inform the Drupal Association no later than Tuesday August 6th, 5pm U.S. Pacific.

Why create such a rushed process without any community input for something so important as the Drupal logo? Personally I saw this yesterday so can't pass this on to any of the designers I think would be great candidates since you've given people three business days to respond. Why not at least open of the finalists for a vote?

Thanks for the comments. Even with the short window, there have been more than 20 great firms and designers who have expressed interest. One reason the time is short is we hope to have the brand completed by DrupalCon Prague, which is about 6 weeks away. It may be the last DrupalCon before Drupal 8 is released so we hope to take advantage of the buzz and energy at the event. I am writing a post right now that will outline a process for community input along the way. I hope to have that up tomorrow afternoon US Pacific time.
