Confessions of a one-time Project Module contributor

Or, The Project Module and the Deadly Sins of Drupal Development

Forgive me, Drupal, for I have sinned. It's been many months since my last confession.

At the Drupal Association we've set upgrading drupal.org as our top priority this year, and much of that work depends on project.*.

The Project module and kin are some of the most important pieces of drupal.org--and some of the most difficult. Six months after Drupal 6 came out, drupal.org still is still running Drupal 5, in large part because project.* is not yet upgraded.

Improving Drupal.org download process with web analytics

In the month of June we enabled Google Analytics on Drupal.org as part of an effort to build a user experience toolkit. The toolkit was designed to provide insight on: what users were searching for, what traffic patterns and workflows vistors were following, and what usability feedback we can get from field studies. If you are interested in Drupal.org analytics you should attend the web conference on key performance indicators tomorrow.

Last week we had a business kick-off meeting for the Drupal.org re-design. The purpose of this meeting was to start two important efforts: establishing business objectives for the re-design, and begin the re-design request for qualifications and request for proposals process.

How to Have a Successful Social Strategy

Two weeks ago I attended a joint Web 2.0 (conference) and Web2Open (unconference) two part session on building a social strategy for your business. Why hasn't my paid association membership shown up in the directory yet?

First let me thank almost 500 people who've purchased a Drupal association membership. Your support makes it possible to hold Drupal events like Drupalcon North America, Europe, and soon hopefully a Drupalcon Asia. It's also allowing us to purchase the hardware we need to run Drupal.org and help prepare for a redesign.

There's been a backlog in processing memberships and we are working to fix this problem. Let me give you a bit of a technical explanation and then explain what we are doing to fix this.

    Announcing Drupalcon Szeged 2008

After several months of searching for an appropriate city, venue, and team to host this year's European Drupalcon we are happy to announce that Drupalcon will be in Szeged, Hungary! Gábor Hojtsy and Kristof Van Tomme, teamed up the local event planner/travel agency, C&T, are heading up our Drupalcon Europe team and they are doing an outstanding job at organizing this year's conference.

We are expecting a thousand Drupal enthusiasts from around the world; which means that we'll be turning the picturesque student town of Szeged into Drupaltown for almost a week!

Drupalcon has been a major success for the Drupal community, with every conference reaching out to more and more people. Like Boston, Drupalcon Szeged will again provide ample opportunities both for business people, developers, themers, designers, and users in the community: there will be a code sprint, plenty of space for BOF sessions, a job fair and, of course, plenty of opportunity for networking. Start planning, buy your tickets early and be prepared to meet your Drupal community in Szeged, Hungary; Drupaltown!

For more information please read the official announcement on Drupal.org and stay tuned to the official website at szeged2008.drupalcon.org (or drupalcon.org for short)

Drupalcon 2009? We are currently planning the 2009 Drupalcon in North America and Europe. Please submit your proposals and ideas now.

Drupal showcase and case study contest: Books, Hosting, and other prizes

What will it take for Drupal to break through in to the main stream? Drupal needs better marketing. Specifically Drupal needs more showcase sites and case studies to help evaluators understand what can be done with Drupal. We've already got a good list of case studies, success stories, featured sites, and a list of show case sites. To help rally the community, there will be a Drupal site showcase and case study contest at the upcoming Boston Drupalcon.

Go on over to the Drupalcon Boston site to submit your favorite sites and view and vote for the best ones.

Results of the 2008 Drupal Association Election

On January 15, 2008 (Drupal's 7 year anniversary), the Drupal Association held its first general assembly. This assembly was an important step towards long-term sustainability: when the Association was first created, a small number of known contributors to the broader Drupal community were chosen to act as voting board members. This assembly marks the first opportunity for any interested member of the Drupal community to apply for a position in the Association, guiding and directing its development over the next year.
